Grain shortfall projected

China faces a grain shortfall of almost 38 million tons, state media reported. Total demand for grain this year is forecast to be 493 million tons. The continued shortfall suggests China's grain imports will soar, despite government efforts to discourage reliance on imports on national security grounds. The total grain harvest for 2003 was 430 million tons, the lowest yield in 14 years.
