Chinese mining company Hohhot Kekao may have damaged a 100 meter stretch of the Great Wall in Inner Mongolia while looking for gold, Bloomberg reported, citing state media. The regional government ordered the company to stop work five times before two holes were created in a section of the wall that was built during the Qin Dynasty. The allegations are being investigated by police and China’s State Administration of Cultural Heritage. Damage to the wall can result in fines of as much as RMB500,000 (US$73,250) or up to ten years in prison.
