Groups speak out on 19th anniversary of Tiananmen Square crackdown

As the 19th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown on June 3-4 in 1989 passed, various groups registered their reactions. Human Rights Watch said 130 prisoners remained in prison for their role in the demonstrations, and that China should release those detainees ahead of the Olympics. The US State Department called on China to give a full account of the people killed or detained during the incident. The US also said that remaining prisoners should be released and that China should "cease harassment" of victims’ families. Taiwan’s president Ma Ying-jeou said China had made progress since its economic reforms began in 1979, although he was concerned about whether mainland Chinese could "enjoy a life of freedom and democracy." Ma toned down his usually scathing statements on the Tiananmen crackdown during this year’s anniversary.
