Guangdong province has introduced a new law to ban people from eating wild
animals, AFP reported. The measure was drafted shortly after initial research by the
University of Hong Kong indicated that civet cats could he the source of the spread to
humans of the coronavirus responsible for Sars. This finding was disputed by the
Agricultural University of China.
In addition, Guangdong's forestry depart-ment issued an
urgent notice for the strict enforcement of a ban in the trade and husbandry of the animals.
The notice requires travelling circuses and farms, as well as restaurants that serve wildlife,
to halt the use of the animals. However zoos, wildlife parks and circuses with fixed
performance loca-tions are exempt.
