[photopress:cargo_ship2.jpg,full,alignright]In a bid to prevent Hong Kong from being marginalized by massive transport developments in Guangdong as part of China’s 11th Five-Year Plan, the Hong Kong government has proposed setting up a high-level cross-bureau committee to coordinate and oversee all cross-border transport infrastructure projects.
At the same time, an executive councillor has suggested that — if such a body is set up — it should be led by Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen or one of his bureau chiefs.
The problem for Hong Kong is the Five-Year Plan which will improve the accessibility and capacity of the transportation system inside the province, as well as its connectivity with other pan-Pearl River Delta provinces. It is also planned to further develop ports and airports.
The emphasis on transportation comes as the Guangdong government presses ahead with the phase-two extension of the new Baiyun airport in Guangzhou, which will dramatically increase its capacity in a short period. Enlargement of ports and airports in Guangdong could pose a serious challenge to Hong Kong International Airport’s status as a regional hub.
