Authorities in Guangzhou announced a hold on construction of the city's fifth metro line amid concern over economic overheating. The decision follows pressure from the local people's congress and the local committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), state media reported. Work on the 42 km, US$1.93 billion line had been due to begin on May 28. One deputy said that with two other metro lines already under construction the city was investing too heavily in metro projects at the expense of other forms of transportation.
