China is building a US$14.9 million laboratory in Wuhan that it hopes will be one of the most advanced in the region for testing dangerous diseases such as avian influenza, the Financial Times reported. The P4 level lab, one of only a few in the world, is part of an effort by China to reduce over-reliance on foreign health professionals during epidemics and an example of its ambitions to become an innovator in scientific research. The facility, developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is expected to be finished in two years.
