Hong Kongers top global donors to US universities

Hong Kong was the top source of major international donations to US universities between January 2007 and November 2013, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing its own analysis of US Department of Education data. Not including a donation of US$370 million (HK$2.868 billion) this month from the territory’s billionaire Chan brothers to Harvard (US$350 million) and the University of Southern California (US$20 million), Hong Kong was responsible for US$180 million in donations during said period, accounting for 17% of total global donations. Hong Kong residents accounted for a total of 163 disclosed gifts during the 2007-12 period reviewed by the Journal, with an average donation of US$1.1 million.
