Horizon Lines will launch an express shipping service from China to the US West Coast in mid-December, using five container ships.
This puts Horizon Lines in direct competition with Matson Navigation for the China business. Matson and Horizon are the top two maritime shipping lines to Hawaii.
Horizon’s Five Star Express shipping service will sail from Shanghai to Long Beach, California in 11 days. The company is adding more than 12,000 containers to handle the expected extra traffic.
Matson, already serving Shanghai with its own China Express service, recently leased five more container ships to expand its service to include stops in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta in addition to serving Xiamen, Ningbo and Shanghai.
Hawaii News Now reports that the selling points for both Matson and Horizon are that their container ships, smaller than the ones trudging between Hong Kong and Long Beach, are both faster and quicker to unload.
