Huaneng to double output

Huaneng Power International has announced plans to double its power generation capacity within seven years, reported China Daily. The chairman of China's largest independent power producer, Li Xiaopeng, said the company would add 1.5GW of capacity in 2003, 5.3GW next year and 7.5GW annually in subsequent years. It aims to achieve this goal by building new plants and expanding the capacity of existing ones. For example, it intends to increase capacity at its planned Yuhuan plant in Zhejiang province – from an initial plan of four 600MW generators to two 600MW units and two 1,000MW units.

Under the State Development Planning Commission's current five-year plan, China should increase capacity from 350GW presently to about 400GW by 2005.
