The lawyers of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei who was arrested in Canada last week, failed to secure bail for her on Monday as pressure from Chinese groups at home and abroad mounts, the Financial Times reports.
David Martin, representing Ms. Meng, told the judge that she was prepared to wear an ankle tag and remain under round-the-clock home surveillance in Vancouver.
He later said refuted claims that Meng had been avoiding the US for fear of charges, instead pointing to the tense political situation.
“It would take somebody who is utterly tone deaf to not understand that the United States has a political legal posture of adversity against both China and its largest company,” said Martin.
Prior to the hearing, Huawei issued a statement saying that it had “every confidence that the Canadian and the US legal systems will reach the right conclusion.”
