In his first interview with US media, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei told CBS news that his company has “never” shared information or collaborated with the Chinese government, responding to a recent wave of scrutiny surrounding the telecoms giant.
“For the past 30 years, we have never done that, and the next 30 years to come, we will never do that.”
When asked whether there could be covert means for Beijing to access valuable company data – a “backdoor” – Ren replied “it is not possible.”
“Because across our entire organization, we’ve stressed once and again that we will never do that. If we did have that, with America’s advanced technology, they would have found that already. So that proves we do not have it,” said Ren.
Huawei has come under fire from a number of governments for its alleged links with the central government and participation in cyberespionage. Many countries are now considering banning the company from participating in domestic 5G networks, with the US already having approved the measure.
