Chinese telecom group Huawei Technologies has cruised past American rival Apple Inc to become the world’s second highest-selling smartphone maker, after seeing shipments rise 40% year-on-year in the second quarter, Caixin reports.
Huawei shipped 54 million units in the three months to June 30, according to data from IDC and Counterpoint Research, while Apple shipped 41 million, up 0.7% year-on-year. The number one spot was retained by Samsung, which shipped 71.5 million units during the period, though this figure was down 10.4% on last year.
“The arrival of Huawei in the second position marks the first quarter since 2Q10 where Apple has not been the number one or two smartphone company in terms of market share,” commented IDC.
The Chinese company’s growth has been fueled by rapid expansion into new markets. The company’s sales were up 75% year-on-year in Europe, 67% y-o-y in the Middle East and Africa, and an impressive 188% in India.
