President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order this week banning Huawei from US wireless networks, Politico reported, while more European governments take steps to limit the Chinese telecoms giant’s presence.
The UK will also introduce new legislation blocking Huawei from sensitive technology projects, the Sun reports, as will Norway. The German government too met last week to discuss possible safeguards against spy risks from Huawei equipment.
Following on from this theme, US envoy to the European Union Gordon Sondland called on America and Europe to “link arms” against the threat of subversive Chinese activity in an interview last week, saying that the two blocs should “combine our mutual energies.”
“We have a $40 trillion combined GDP, there is nothing on the planet that is more powerful than that – to meet China and check China in multiple respects: economyically, from an intelligence standpoint, militarily.”
A number of US universities also announced they will cease collaboration with and funding from Huawei, including Stanford and UC Berkeley.
