Hundreds oppose waste incinerator in Guangzhou

Hundreds of protestors in Guangzhou assembled outside government offices to oppose plans to construct a large garbage incinerator, Reuters reported. Local television stations broadcast images of angry people, many wearing face masks, demanding the resignation of the city’s deputy general secretary, Lu Zhiyi. Locating waste management facilities too close to populated areas is blamed for creating a cluster of "cancer villages" in the region. Despite the protests, government officials said Sunday that the waste incinerator is still their preferred option.
