Hundreds protest against Guangdong chemical plant

Hundreds of demonstrators marched against a chemical plant in the city of Maoming in Guangdong province on Sunday, Reuters reported, citing photos on the microblog service Weibo and a city government statement condemning the protest as a “grave violation” of the law. The photos, which Reuters was not able to independently verify, show bloodied protesters and lines of paramilitary police. Residents were protesting the production of paraxylene, a chemical used to make fabrics and plastic bottles at a plant run by the local government and state-owned China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (SNP.NYSE, 0386.HKG, 600028.SHA), China’s biggest refiner.
