Sweden’s Ericsson has won a US$600m contract to expand the GSM network of Guangdong
Mobile, a subsidiary of China Mobile Hong Kong. It will provide the infrastructure
equipment to allow the network to reach 36m subscribers, up from 25m at the end of June.
Korea Electric Power is to build two 50MW coal-fired power plants in Henan province
at a cost of US$65m. The state-run company will manage and operate them for 20 years.
Singapore Telecom has signed a deal with China Telecom to provide telecoms services to
and from China. The two firms will target multinationals with operations in China, enabling
them to communicate with their offices in the rest of the world. Services should be launched
in October and will include internet-based networks, technical support and single billing.
