US electronics giant Intel plans to invest US$100m to upgrade its facility in Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone, Shanghai, to become its fourth international manufacturing base for Pentium 4 processors. Under the plan, Waigaoqiao will assemble and test the 0.13 micron version of its Pentium 4 processor, although the core technology of central processing unit production, design and wafer production will remain in the US.
Intel has already invested US$500m in research and testing facilities in China and under current expansion plans it will increase the number of people employed in Shanghai from 1,324 to more than 5,000 by 2004.
