Internet cafe ban possible for under-18s

Children under the age of 18 could be banned from using Internet cafes in China under a draft law that has been brought before the National People's Congress (NPC), AFP reported. There is widespread concern that the country's Internet cafes have become hotbeds of crime and foster online gaming addictions among young people. Yang Jingyu, chairman of the NPC's law committee, said Sunday that removing Internet cafes from the equation would allow students to concentrate more on their studies. However, other lawmakers argued that such a ban would be impossible to enforce and could hinder the development of IT skills. It was also pointed out that it would be unreasonable to prevent a 16 year-old in full employment from entering an Internet cafe. The Chinese government has long strived to censor violent and pornographic web content as well as limiting access to political and religious material it believes could trigger social unrest.
