Joint venture wins Sudan dam contract

A joint venture between China National Water Resources & Hydropower Engineering Corp and China International Water & Electric Corp has won a US$645m civil works contract from Sudan for the Merowe Dam project. It beat off competition from Greek and Italian companies to help build the 1,500MW dam.

It will be constructed near the fourth cataract along the Nile, about 120km north of Khartoum, and is being financed by various Arabian development funds.
