[photopress:peacehotel_1.jpg,full,alignright]The Peace Hotel is slashing prices to give guests a chance for one last night before a planned renovation in the middle of the year. Staff said price cuts were a thank you to their guests, and came after more than 20 of their most frequent visitors requested stays in their favorite rooms ahead of the $50 million upgrade of the hotel’s southern building.
Sherry Gu, public relations manager of the hotel, said, Henner Eckhardt, a 72-year-old dentist from Germany who comes to Shanghai twice a year, booked a 10-day stay in his regular room when he heard about the restoration.
The hotel decided to offer 80 percent discounts on 35 of its most historic rooms, including nine deluxe suites decorated in the national style of nine different countries, such as India, Spain and Italy. The hotel is also drafting a menu of ‘classical set meals,’ which will include authentic Shanghai cuisine.Sherry Gu said, ‘These dishes have been very popular during the hotel’s 100-year history.’
First built in 1854 and rebuilt in 1906, the southern building of the hotel boasts an Italian Renaissance architectural style. The renovation by owner Jinjiang will retain the style of the building but change the number of rooms.
