Make no mistake, the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party is going to be a show that may even put last year’s Olympics to shame. Traffic had been a nightmare throughout the day on Sunday, with large sections of the city’s roads closed off to civilian vehicles. But the display began in earnest by the north gate of the Worker’s Stadium close to 2 a.m. on Monday – a row of tanks and military vehicles whose treads shook the ground as they drove east. Policemen stood at 10 meter intervals to ensure that onlookers did not cross the police tape lining the road. The unofficial parade of military force lasted at least 20 minutes, and is likely to be just a preview of what’s to come on October 1.
