Lucent wins optical fibre contract

Lucent
Technologies has won a contract worth tens of millions of dollars to build an optical fibre
network in Beijing's suburbs. The telecoms equipment maker will build the network for
Beijing Communication Corp, a unit of China Netcom, China's number two fixed-line
operator. The contract will involve converting voice networks to multi-service' networks that
will also be capable of carrying high-speed data traffic.
