Close to 75% of mainland theme parks are losing money and only 10% are making a profit despite recent investment inflows of over US$18 billion, according to Chinese media reports. The losses were reported to be results of poor management, fierce competition, lack of innovation and reliance on ticket sales as a primary revenue source. Beijing has more than 35 theme parks, the majority of them small in scale. Local parks have an average investment of US$48 million whereas foreign-funded parks, such as the US$2.9 billion theme park being built by Walt Disney in Hong Kong, have average investments of near US$1 billion.
