More than half the world’s shoes (6bn pairs) are produced in China each year by 1.6m
workers. About 40 per cent of production is exported, with China accounting for 22 per cent
of the global shoe market, reported Textile Asia.
China Eastern Airlines has taken delivery of the first of five Airbus A340-600 aircraft.
Seven A320s will also join the airline’s fleet this year, adding to its existing 70 Airbus planes.
Ningbo, Zhejiang province is to host the fourth China international automobile exhibition
from September 19-22.
Suzhou’s production of laptop computers is now the world’s largest with annual output
close to 10m units – about a quarter of the global total. Locally-based laptop producers
include nine Taiwanese-owned firms such as Uniwell, Mitac and Acer. Samsung Electronics
of South Korea also manufactures laptops in the city.
Major web portals have sold out of online advertising space for the rest of 2003, said
Media, while some have hiked rates on the back of rising demand. Hurst Lin of Sina.com
said the online advertising market was attracting ‘traditional’ brands rather than the preponderance
of dotcom advertisers seen in the US a few years ago.
The Beijing organising committee for the 2008 Olympics is due to launch early this
month a marketing plan giving details of how companies can become sponsors, suppliers
and licensees for the event. So far, nine majopr global sponors have been secured.
British luxury car maker Bentley sold 32 units in China in the first half of this year,
including one for US$1.36m incorporating flat-screen television, stereo and DVD player,
said South China Morning Post. Bentley, which sells only hand-made cars, entered the Chinese
market last year with showrooms and repair centres in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.
