Merkel, Hu agree on nuclear position

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Chinese President Hu Jintao agreed Iran must not have nuclear weapons. The European Union has had a difficult time agreeing on how to get Tehran to abandon its nuclear program. In her first visit to China as chancellor, Merkel wanted to urge China to play a more leading role in world affairs to match its growing economic might. Merkel has also overseen the signing of 19 trade deals on railways, finance, telecommunications and energy. China is currently considering using German magnetic levitation technology (Maglev) on a 175-kilometre link out of Shanghai. Merkel and Wen Jiabao also discussed efforts to combat intellectual property rights piracy and China's human rights record.
