Billionaire financial data entrepreneur Michael Bloomberg has teamed up with veteran policy makers and China experts to launch an event focusing explicitly on China’s rise as a global power, akin to the annual meetings in Davos organised by the World Economic Forum.
The New Economy Forum will be spearheaded by Bloomberg, former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and ex-US Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson. They will partner the China Center for International Economic Exchanges – a government-backed economic think-tank run by former Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan.
The forum’s first assembly is scheduled for November in Beijing. According to Bloomberg, the goal of the meetings will be to facilitate cooperation between private- and public-sector bodies in sourcing solutions to economic and environmental issues that come with China’s ascent.
“Davos has been around for a long time: it is a very big conference and it is focused on lots of world problems. This conference is focused on the world and China as an emerging power and how we all work together,” he told the Financial Times.
