[photopress:Disney_Park.gif,full,alignright]Plans to build a Disney-themed park in Shanghai are beginning to look doubtful as Walt Disney may not get approval from Beijing for construction to go ahead.
A government source said, ‘I won’t say Beijing will never give its approval for the Shanghai park. But nobody knows when, and the timing is the biggest problem.’
Approval from the Beijing government has been hard to get due to a recent corruption scandal in September, which involved Shanghai’s Communist Party boss, Chen Liangyu, who, along with other senior officials, was suspected of embezzling local pension funds.
Disney hasn’t confirmed Shanghai as a definite location for its first theme park in China but said it was considering it.
‘It’s not going to be in the South or on the coast,” said the government source. “[It may be] somewhere where they’re desperate to promote some growth.’
Looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer for the delights of Disney to reach Shanghai. ‘Tis a pity.
