The number of China’s microblog users is expected to reach 65 million by the end of this year, according to Hu Qiheng, director of the China Internet Association.
Speaking at the fourth US-China Internet Industry Forum earlier this week, Hu said the popularity of microblogs has promoted the rapid development of mobile internet.
Based on Web 2.0 technology, a microblog differs from a traditional blog in that its content is typically much shorter, in both actual size and aggregate file size. A microblog entry could consist of nothing but a short sentence fragment, an image or embedded video.
China has 277 million mobile Web surfers, accounting for a third of the total mobile phone users. Of the total Web surfers, the proportion of internet accesses via mobile phones increased to 11.7%, English People’s Daily Online reported.
According to Hu, the penetration rate of mobile internet users is 33% of total mobile phone users.
