Microblogging services are rapidly gaining popularity in China. Research firm Analysys International reported that user numbers for such sites have grown from 8 million last year to 75 million at present. Forecasts from Analysys are 145 million for 2010 and 240 million for 2012.
Microblogging is a form of blogging. A microblog differs from a traditional blog in that its content is typically much smaller. A microblog entry could consist of nothing but a short sentence fragment, or an image or embedded video. It is ideally suited to a nation that is moving rapidly to smart phones from notebooks.
Sina stated in November that Sina Weibo has secured 50 million members in 14 months.
WARC reports that Sina Weibo is following the model pioneered by Twitter. It limits messages to 140 Chinese characters but allows visitors to upload pictures and video. Some 25 million items have been posted so far.
