Strange times as we slide towards the glorious 19th, and the drama gained a new American angle beyond the Trump farce (which is in an indirect way a big help in setting the stage for a New Era in the People’s Republic). We refer to the application reportedly made for political asylum by Manhattan man-about-town Guo Wengui who has been a thorn in the sides of Those in Command now for months. They want him to just shut up, and preferably also return the warm embrace of the motherland.
But Miles, as he is known in English, has now placed US-China relations in interesting new territory reminiscent of a reverse Fang Lizhi situation (look it up). Will the Trump administration grant the request? How does it play out either way? Endless room for speculation, which is what China watchers of course love most.
VPN update: There still seems too be, as yet, no significant impact on the standard external VPN providers as we glide to the nebulous 19th, and long may that be the case. The free flow of information has a direct and positive economic impact, and we are all in favor of positive economic impacts. Have a pleasant late summer weekend.
