Motorola to treble investment

Motorola intends to invest a total of US$6.6bn in China over the next five years, Reuters reported. This would increase the company’s total investment in the country from its present level of US$3.4bn to US$10bn. Production at the company’s China units is set to double to US$10bn in 2006. The investment will cover employing workers and building offices and factories, including at least 10 semi-conductor wafer fabrication plants.

A separate report on the chinabyte.com website quoted a representative of Motorola (China) Electronics as saying that it plans to transfer its research and development centre in the UK to Chengdu, Sichuan province, the location of its first Chinese joint venture, Leshan Phoenix Semiconductor Co.
