China's electronics industry is preparing to comply with two European Union environmental directives that: 1) restricts the use of hazardous materials in electronics; and 2) requires manufacturers to recycle used electronics and parts, state media reported. The mandates take effect July and August 2006 and their implementation is expected to cost Chinese electronics manufacturers US$10bn. China exported about US$380bn in electronics to the EU in 2004.
