Ning Jizhe, vice chairman of China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), has been chosen as the new leader of the National Bureau of Statistics following the detainment in January of former head Wang Baoan on unspecified corruption charges, Bloomberg reported. Ning is known as a confidant of Premier Li Keqiang, and is the main author of the speeches and reports presented by Li. The new statistics bureau head, who will also continue to serve on the NDRC, takes charge during a period of intense scrutiny of China’s official data as the country faces an intensifying slowdown in heavy industry and manufacturing.
