Next-generation USB instant file transfer

[photopress:it_usb4.JPG,full,alignright]Transferring files from your digital video camera to your computer will happen in an instant as USB enters a new generation. This new standard will be called USB3 and will be ratified in the first half on next year and the first new products will be with us late 2009, early 2010.

Jeffery Ravencraft, head of the USB Implementers Forum and Intel technology strategist, says USB has become the standard for connecting devices to the computers, and the formation of the USB 3.0 Promoter Group will help deliver a faster transfer.

Jeffrey Ravencraft said, ‘USB is the most successful interface in the history of computing.

‘Last year they shipped 2.1 billion USB connections, and to date more than six billion units. It’s phenomenal, people use it everywhere. But the consumer has very low tolerance and is impatient with technology.’

But people are impatient. They do not like slow transfers.

‘For example, a high-definition movie, which is about 27GB, with high-speed USB 2.0 will take about 14 minutes. With superspeed USB 3.0 it will take 70 seconds.’

And the next generation of USB will be backward-compatible.

Also coming up is wireless USB, which has received regulatory approval in several countries with China expected to sign it off by the end of this year. Then you will not even have to plug in a device to get a high speed transfer.
