One of the world’s largest shipping group’s, the Singapore-controlled Neptune Orient Lines, has set up a regional office in Shanghai to oversee operations of its liner shipping fleet. The fleet operates under the name of APL and has emerged as one of the leading carriers involved in the China marketplace.
To support the Asian region responsibiliable ties, a Greater China region including Hong Kong and Taiwan has been created. This will be based in Shanghai and headed by Brian Lutt, who will be given overall responsibility for cargo operations over the mainland and Taiwan. The move to include Taiwan is widely seen as a prelude to the establishment of direct trade routes across the Taiwan Strait, and the carriage of seabourne cargo by ships registered in either Taiwan or the mainland.
