Nuclear power usage set to expand

The National Development and Reform Commission, China's top planning agency, issued its nuclear power development plan for the period from 2005 to 2020 on Friday, Xinhua reported (in Chinese). Under to the plan, which has been officially approved by the State Council, 23 million kilowatts of generating capacity will be added by 2020, more than doubling the country's nuclear power capacity to 40 million kW by 2020. A total of US$60 billion has been earmarked for investment in new nuclear power plants. The new power stations will mostly be built in coastal provinces such as Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shandong, Jiangsu, Liaoning and Fujian.
