Official: Discussion of NATO assistance "too premature"

A Chinese diplomat said it was premature to consider if Beijing would assist NATO’s war effort in Afganistan after a senior US official said the alliance may ask Beijing for help, AP reported, citing state media. Ma Canrong, China’s ambassador to Germany told state media that China shared NATO’s goal of fighting terrorism and wanted to see a stable Afganistan, but noted that "there is little link between China and NATO at the government level." One way that Beijing could assist NATO is to open an alternative logistics route through Western China into Afganistan. China shares a 76-kilometer-long border with Afghanistan in the Wakhan Corridor, a thin, sparsely populated strip of Afghan territory separating Pakistan and Tajikistan.
