Officials: 60-mile traffic jam to remain until September

The 60-mile traffic jam caused by construction on the Beijing-Tibet highway will not end until September 17, said Zhang Minghai, director of the Zhangjiakou city Traffic Management Bureau, the Wall Street Journal reported. The congestion on National Highway 110 began on August 13; vehicles have since been moving at a pace of one-third mile per day. Police have been dispatched to reroute cars and ensure that trucks carrying food and flammable materials get through the jam quickly. The severe congestion, primarily located on a stretch between Beijing and Inner Mongolia, highlights many of the bottlenecks that plague China’s infrastructure. It is expected to raise costs for coal being transported from China’s northwestern provinces to coastal regions.
