Officials jailed for spying for UK

Two Chinese officials, both former employees of Beijing's official liaison office in Hong Kong, have been jailed for spying for the British government. Wei Pinguan, who worked for the office before its 1997 handover to China, has been jailed for life; while Cai Xiaohong, a former secretary-general in the same department, was jailed for 15 years. Wei, who was convicted by a court in Guangdong province, reportedly passed secrets to the British in the run-up to the Hong Kong handover in return for payments amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
