Officials: Xinjiang riots were coordinated

Beijing claims it has video proving that the riots in Xinjiang earlier this month were coordinated, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing state media. The English-language paper the China Daily quoted police as saying that women in Islamic head scarves and robes gave instructions to rioters. One woman was said to have handed out clubs to be used during the rioting which killed 197 people, the majority of them Han Chinese. State media also cited unnamed security officials as saying the riots broke out with 50 almost-simultaneous attacks that could have only occurred if they were organized in advance. But Rohan Gunaratna, a Singapore-based terrorism expert, said Beijing has shown little evidence that proves the attacks were coordinated.
