One Chinese dead, 100 detained in Ghana

A Chinese citizen was killed and more than 100 others detained by Ghanaian police in a crackdown on alleged illegal gold mining, according to a statement on the Chinese embassy website, Bloomberg reported. The raid was conducted jointly by the police and military, and the Chinese citizens involved “have immigration issues,” according to Ghana’s Interior Minister Kwasi Aboah. Chinese state media reported the person killed to be a 16-year-old boy. “We demand the Ghanaian side investigate the case and punish the perpetrators as soon as possible and inform the Chinese side of relevant information about the investigation,” said Hong Lei, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry. China’s ambassador to Ghana has requested compensation for the victim’s family via a statement on the embassy’s website. High gold prices have led to Chinese setting up illegal small-scale mines in Ghana.
