Parents detained before melamine verdict

Parents of infants sickened by melamine-tainted milk powder threatened to organize protests after two of them were prevented from traveling to Hebei for the announcement of the verdict by the Shijiazhuang Intermediate People’s Court, the South China Morning Post reported. Dong Shiliang, a parent from Yunnan, was detained as he tried to board a plane for Beijing. Beijing parent Liu Donglin was secretly held by police Wednesday afternoon, but texted news of his detention to the organizer of an online bulletin board for victims of the tainted milk powder. Parents of more than 500 children have already signed a petition rejecting the government compensation offer that would give most parents of sickened children US$292 per child.
