Party elite endorse Hu's policies

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China gave President Hu Jintao its endorsement of a policy document that calls for "constructing a socialist harmonious society" in 15 years, the South China Morning Post reported, citing state media. The committee also announced that the 17th Party Congress would convene late next year. During the plenary session held in Beijing, and attended by about 350 members and alternate members, the decision-making body said it would seek limited political reform, fight corruption and reduce the rich-poor gap. "There are many contradictions and issues that impair social harmony," said a communique issued following the meetings. The party now plans to give the goal of building a harmonious society more prominence while economic development will remain as the central task.
