Party expels sacked Beijing vice-mayor

The former vice-mayor of Beijing in charge of Olympic construction projects has been expelled from the Communist Party of China. Liu Zhihua was fired from his vice-mayoral post in June because he "took several million yuan in bribes and helped his mistress to seek profit in projects," state media reported Tuesday. The case has now been handed over to prosecutors and Liu may face official charges. The announcement comes a week after Beijing appointed Xu Bo, a Ministry of Construction engineer, as the new supervisor for Olympic construction projects. Beijing officials have repeatedly said Liu's actions did not affect Olympic venues.
