PepsiCo opens new Chongqing factory

PepsiCo opened a new factory in China last week and plans five more over the next two years as it tries to boost its China sales, the Wall Street Journal reported. The new plant, located in Chongqing, will manufacture beverages including Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Tropicana juices and bottled water. The planned factories will be located in under-developed regions in China, and are an attempt to reach into the country’s heartland. The company said it would invest US$1 billion over the next five years to increase research and development and manufacturing, and to build a bigger sales force. China is Pepsi’s second-largest beverage market by volume after the US. PepsiCo’s main rival, Coca-Cola, is investing US$2 billion over three years to build new plants and improve marketing and distribution in China.
