Population census widens to include empty housing

The Chinese government will begin to collect data on vacant housing in the upcoming population census, Caixin reported. According to the National Statistics Bureau (NBS), data from the survey will be used to determining housing vacancy rates and compiled into reports for specific cities. Such data will serve as an important measure of the health of the real estate market; many are concerned that high vacancy rates are indicative of  investment bubble formation caused by speculation. Another report in state media today alleged that individuals have been discovered abusing the consumption loan system by putting up existing property for the consumption loan, then plowing the loan into third-home purchases. While the bureau will use statistical analysis tools to estimate vacancy rates, it has no intention of conducting a large-scale housing survey in the near future.
