Power sector emissions to top that of US this year

Carbon dioxide emissions from China’s electric power sector will jump by about a third this year, surpassing the total emissions of the US electric power industry for the first time, the Washington Post reported, citing a report by Washington-based Center for Global Development. Chinese power plants will produce about 3.1 billion tons of CO2 this year, up from about 2.3 billion tons last year. American power plants are seen to produce about 2.8 billion tons of C02 this year, virtually unchanged from 2007. The report, which was gathered from public data, said that while China and India are improving their energy efficiency, the rapid pace of economic growth would require doubling emissions from power plants over the next 12 years.
