Shanghai's Pudong Airport expects cargo growth of 15-20 per cent annually over the next five years, said the airport's marketing manager Yi Jiwu. "Air cargo usually grows 2 per cent for every 1 per cent rise in GDP, and Shanghai and the Yangtze Delta region is growing at 10 per cent," he explained.
Last year, Pudong handled 1m tonnes of cargo, despite a design capacity of 750,000 tonnes. However, plans are in place to expand capacity to 5m tonnes by 2010 and to speed up handling and customs clearance. "By the end of this year, the handling and clearance times for everything within the bonded export areas will be just four hours," said Yi.
