Qaidam: largest grid-connected solar power station

        Solar panels

The construction of China’s largest grid-connected solar power plant will begin in Qinghai’s Qaidam Basin later this year. There will be  an initial investment of around RMB1 billion.

The solar power station will have a total installed capacity of 1 gigawatt, or 1,000 megawatts, of power. It will be the first plant in China to use photovoltaic cell arrays that combine amorphous silicon thin films and crystalline silicon, and will be China’s largest grid-connected photovoltaic power station at present.

Large grids basically cover the entire area, which enjoys about 3,000 hours of sunshine annually on average, making it an ideal location in the desert to build the large-scale grid-connected solar power station.
